Marine Diesel Engine Diagnostics Survey.
Marine Diesel Engine Diagnostics Survey. At Santa Barbara Marine Diesel Mechanic, Servicing Channel Islands Harbor, Ventura Harbor & Santa Barbara Harbor. If you’re purchasing a new Yacht, the Diesel Engines make up about 40% – 45% of the overall Price of your Yacht. 95% of Marine Surveyors are not Qualified Diesel Engine Mechanics, and just doing visual inspection of the Diesel Engines only gets you half of the information needed to make a diligent purchase. MARINE MECHANIC
Our Diesel Engine Surveys Include:
Visual Inspection:
Our comprehensive marine engine surveys begin with an initial visual inspection of the vessels machinery space to evaluate the engines and mechanical systems for adherence to ABYC and manufacturers specifications.
Sea Trial:
Check the engine RPM, pressures and temperatures while operating the vessel under cruise RPM
conditions and full (WOT) load.
Generator operation checked under full load.
Compare performance to the specifications required by the manufacturer.
Computerized Diagnostic:
For electronically controlled engines, diagnostic equipment is connected to not only check and record any diagnostic codes (active and historical) but also measure and record engine operational parameters.
Wide Open Throttle (WOT) Testing:
A WOT test will reveal several performance parameters and will make sure the propeller and engine are properly matched. It will also confirm whether or not the engine is capable of producing maximum RPMs for an extended period of time without experiencing problems such as overheating, smoking, vibrating or abnormal fuel consumption.
Oil Analysis:
Samples of engine crankcase oil are taken for laboratory analysis.
Report:
At the conclusion of our marine engine survey we will provide you with a comprehensive written report encompassing a list of deficiencies and recommendations, diagnostic reports and fluid analysis results with interpretation and support documentation including engine technical data and operators’ manuals.
Prices:
Visual engine survey no computerized hook up: $500.00 per engine
Visual & ECM computerized survey: $750.00 per engine
Marine Diesel Generators: $400.00

What is Marine Diesel Engine Computerized Diagnostics?
Marine Engine Diagnostics is the analysis of the engine’s built in computer system. This is done by connecting to the engine’s Electronic Control Module (ECM). The computers and software we use has an adapter unique to the engine manufacture to provide valuable information regarding the engines’ history. By connecting into the ECM we can learn valuable information regarding your potential purchase. By doing engine diagnostic scans this enables the surveyor to verify valuable information such as the actual engine hours, the RPM run history so we know how the engines have been operated during their life, current engine fault codes as well as historic fault codes.
Engine diagnostics provides valuable information regarding the engine’s history to better enable our customers to make an informed decision before the purchase of the vessel. On inboard powered boats our sophisticated software has the ability to actually record the engines performance during the sea trial. This enables our surveys to verify the helm gauges accuracy and get exact details on the engine’s performance when sea trialing. Engine diagnostics is available as an additional option in conjunction with a marine survey on all gasoline inboard and most outboard engines providing the engines are ECM equipped.
